Crystal Palace and Rayo Vallecano are meeting for the first time having both qualified for their maiden UEFA club competition finals in only their second continental campaigns. Prior to this season, Palace’s only European games had come in the 1998 edition of the now defunct UEFA Intertoto Cup, while Rayo’s only previous UEFA campaign ended in a quarter-final defeat to Spanish rival Alavés in the 2000/01 UEFA Cup, the forerunner of the UEFA Europa League.
