Based on Robert Harris’s gripping novel, this political thriller combines suspense, religious intrigue, and a heavy dose of strategy. The story revolves around on the secrecy and high-stakes maneuvering that take place behind closed doors as the church scrambles to find a successor.
The central conflict revolves around the race to become the next Pope. We have a diverse group of contenders, each with their own political and religious agendas. There’s Bellini (Stanley Tucci), a liberal American who represents progress; Adeyemi (Lucian Msamati), an African candidate gaining popularity; Tremblay (John Lithgow), a Canadian; and Tedesco (Sergio Castellitto), an Italian traditionalist. And then there’s Cardinal Thomas Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes), who’s drawn into the election while grappling with his own morality. As the race heats up, alliances are formed, and betrayals lurk around every corner.
Fiennes brings his trademark intensity to the role of Lawrence, a character who must juggle his personal beliefs with the politics of the church. His performance is anchored by a star-studded cast, including Tucci’s quietly powerful portrayal of Bellini, Lithgow’s sharp presence as Tremblay, and Msamati’s nuanced take on Adeyemi. Each character adds depth to the political tension that builds throughout the film.
